LA VOGUE

It is the year 2520. This is the most fashionable chair you will ever have.

2020

CONCEPT

In tandem with the spirit of my senior thesis - The Grey Haven, this chair’s concept is essentially to explore the future of furniture in a post-singularity world five hundred years into the future. How will we as a race approach furniture different both from the designer and the user’s perspective? Is a floating something that is desirable? Will it make you feel uncomfortable? These are questions that I wished to explore, and hopefully through this project, come closer to an answer.

design process

Let’s take a deep dive into the future. This is the year 2520, the year in which my senior thesis takes place. A year of great change and revelation. I aimed to create and design a piece of furniture that would fit well into such a world, researching current prospective technologies, trends, and blending them with a high-future aesthetic. This is to be a chaise/lounge/massage chair-mix that is intended for residential usage. As such, I settled on neodymium mag-lev and hovercraft engine technologies as the main engineering solution to this design. These are approaches already well under development in application and will most likely be the next immediate trends to undergo rapid evolution and commercialization.

Regarding stylistic choices, my thesis featured a predominantly edgy and austere theme - interesting to explore for a mini-city concept, but not so suitable for residential applications. Therefore this design departed towards the opposite spectrum, representing a more optimistic and healthy outlook towards what our future could hold. The design is named La Vogue. It is imagined to be the next most fashionable possession to have for any consumers in the coming decades - cutting edge technology, and grandeur appearances are sure to satiate an ultra futuristic society. It fits elegantly under any futuristic settings, and can certainly hold its own weight as a centerpiece of one’s living room.
