Premium Jewelry Storage

concept

Intended as a gift to a friend, this design takes inspiration from a tree log sliced horizontally in half - exposing what is most treasured and deeply hidden.

design process

As a basic parameter of the project, we are bound to a hexagonal object from the beginning. However, intent on turning this object into a jewelry storage as a gift to a dear friend, this geometric shape not only makes the most sense in regards to storage space, but also in balance with aesthetic appeal. The main focal element of this project is the frosted acrylic panel suspended as a sliding mechanism for opening and closing the box. The patterns laser engraved reflect my friend’s name in Korean - flowers.

Made from plywood pieces, the foundation structure of the box is assembled by separately calculating and measuring every single joinery and cut with compound angles in order to create the “sliced” effect. This also makes it much easier to route out a parallel track for the acrylic panel to slide through. The overall angle of this slope highlights the reflection of light on the laser engraved patterns even from far distances, all the while allowing light refraction to decrease visibility to the contents inside.

Finally, the box is finished with three layers of matte black wood stain and adorned with a red padding in the base and Korean tassels to accentuate the dynamic nature of the box.
